Certification Track A - Foundation Course (Part I and II)
Are you ready to take your lived experience of recovery and turn it into a meaningful career supporting others? Our Certification Track A (“Foundation Course”) offers a structured, values-based pathway to becoming a certified Peer Support Specialist in North Carolina. Under the NCCPSS Program, Track A is the future-standard route and will become the sole certification pathway once earlier courses expire.
About the Track:
Track A is the official certification pathway for individuals seeking to become Certified Peer Support Specialists in North Carolina. The in-person format offers an immersive and interactive learning experience, designed to strengthen communication skills, build professional confidence, and foster authentic connection rooted in lived experience.
Program Overview:
The in-person training provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of peer support, including:

Recovery language and trauma-informed care
-
Boundaries and ethical decision-making
-
Mutuality, self-advocacy, and empowerment
-
Cultural humility and inclusion in peer relationships
-
Professional roles and responsibilities in mental health and substance use recovery settings
Eligibility Requirements:
Participants must be at least 18 years of age, hold a high school diploma or GED, and have lived experience of recovery from a mental health and/or substance use condition.

Foundation of Peer Support (Part I): Applicants wanting to take the new NCCPSS Certification Foundation of Peer Support (Part I) must review detailed information here. Applicants must complete the ONLINE APPLICATION first to access and complete the course.
To complete the Foundation of Peer Support (Part I), you must:

Meet Eligibility Requirements

Complete 20 additional hours of training

Have Proof of education (a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency)

Complete the NCCPSS Program Ethics Training

Two references (reference letter requested in application)

Pay $20 Application fee

Foundations of Peer Support (Part II): Applicants wanting to take one of the below trainings MUST complete the Foundations of Peer Support (Part I) Online and contact the trainer to register. Once the course has been completed, the applicant will receive an evaluation from the NCCPSS Program to complete and receive their certificate.
